Everyone who's anyone has heard of EasyJet and Ryanair, but who has heard of Wizz Air, Vueling, and Air Wales?
Probably not that many people, but there are now so many budget airlines that a bit of digging around can turn up cheap flights to almost anywhere.
The difficulty is in knowing what the airlines are, and I have recently discovered a very handy little site called WhichBudget.com.
This site, although requiring a little patience to navigate its convoluted menu system, has links to over 80 budget airlines. You can try searching by place, or just clicking on the name of the company. You still have to go through to the actual site of the budget airline, and try out your destination, but it helps you to find airlines and routes that might have been difficult to discover. Some of the airlines don't even fly from Britain, some aren't that cheap, and some don't even have booking in English, but I enjoyed myself having a look around anyway!
I discovered not one, but two budget Polish airlines, flying to cities in Poland for around 33 quid + tax each way, not to mention return tickets to Iceland starting at 80 quid + tax from Stansted with Iceland Express. The beauty of these budget airlines is that you can easily book one-way journeys from anywhere in Eurpoe, so you can go by train to say Finland, then a quick trip to the internet cafe, will get you a flight back within a week for about 80 euros.
Economists reckon this is the age of the budget airline, and that most of them won't survive the current price war, so take advantage while you can!
As a small compensatory measure for those people who don't like flying, I would like to mention www.seat61.com. This fantastic site explains how to get pretty much anywhere you want by only using trains and ferries. It's totally up to date, and even has nice pictures of the trains. I love it.
